Celebrating 30 Years of Connection, Innovation, and Community at Infosecurity Europe in London | Our Traditional Pre-Event Kick-Off Conversation with Saima Poorghobad | On Location Coverage with Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli

Episode Summary

As Infosecurity Europe celebrates its 30th anniversary, Portfolio Director Saima Poorghobad shares how the event has grown into a vital hub for innovation, policy collaboration, and community building across the cybersecurity ecosystem. From quantum computing and geopolitics to student engagement and AI-focused programming, this episode offers a preview of what’s shaping one of the industry’s most anticipated gatherings.

Episode Notes

As Infosecurity Europe prepares to mark its 30th anniversary, Portfolio Director Saima Poorghobad shares how the event continues to evolve to meet the needs of cybersecurity professionals across industries, sectors, and career stages. What began in 1996 as a niche IT gathering has grown into a strategic hub for over 14,000 visitors, offering much more than just vendor booths and keynotes. Saima outlines how the event has become a dynamic space for learning, collaboration, and strategic alignment—balancing deep technical insight with the broader social, political, and technological shifts impacting the cybersecurity community.

The Power of the Crowd: Community, Policy, and Lifelong Learning

This year’s programming reflects the diverse needs of the cybersecurity community. Attendees range from early-career practitioners to seasoned decision-makers, with representation growing from academia and public policy. The UK government will participate in sessions designed to engage with the community and gather feedback to inform future regulation—a sign of how the show has expanded beyond its commercial roots. Universities are also getting special attention, with new student guides and tailored experiences to help emerging professionals find their place in the ecosystem.

Tackling Today’s and Tomorrow’s Threats—From Quantum to Geopolitics

Infosecurity Europe 2024 is not shying away from bold topics. Professor Brian Cox will open the event by exploring the intersection of quantum science and cybersecurity, setting the tone for a future-facing agenda. Immediately following, BBC’s Joe Tidy will moderate a session on how organizations can prepare for the cryptographic disruption quantum computing could bring. Rory Stewart will bring a geopolitical lens to the conversation, examining how shifting alliances, global trade tensions, and international conflicts are reshaping the threat landscape and influencing cybersecurity priorities across regions.

Maximizing the Experience: Prep, Participate, and Party

From hands-on tech demos to peer-led table talks and new formats like the AI and Cloud Security Theater, the show is designed to be navigable—even for first-time attendees. Saima emphasizes preparation, networking, and follow-up as keys to success, with a new content download feature helping attendees retain insights post-event. The celebration culminates with a 90s-themed 30th anniversary party and a strong sense of pride in what this event has helped the community build—and protect—over three decades.

The message is clear: cybersecurity is no longer just a technical field—it’s a societal one.

Sean Martin: Marco,

Marco Ciappelli: Sean, where are you?

Sean Martin: I'm, uh, I'm on my way.

Marco Ciappelli: You're on your way. How are you?

Sean Martin: your breath.

Marco Ciappelli: Are you closer

Sean Martin: I,

Marco Ciappelli: or still closer to where you started?

Sean Martin: I'm in, I think I, I'm a little, yeah, I'm definitely

Marco Ciappelli: You're definitely close. You're definitely close.

Sean Martin: of the triangle. I'm in a triangle of, uh, of, of direction here, but, uh, definitely closer. I, I could. I could drive from where

Marco Ciappelli: You could drive.

Sean Martin: I could drive

Marco Ciappelli: You know what, I have

Sean Martin: take a train.

Marco Ciappelli: I never took the car to London, so that would be interesting. I know you did from Dublin, I guess. Did you ever drive from the

Sean Martin: Dublin. Exactly. With a ferry,

Marco Ciappelli: there you go. There you go. Well, we're, we're, we're talking about geography here. Uh, and I think there is, there is a reason, obviously this is an on-location episode with Sean Martin, which is you and Mark Elli, which is me, and we are all about our next [00:01:00] on-location coverage, which is Infosecurity Europe in London, which is one of our favorite show, uh, of the year, a tradition since 2017, I think.

Something like that. That was the first one.

Sean Martin: I know it's been a few years.

Marco Ciappelli: Yeah. Very good.

Sean Martin: Met a lot of friends there.

Marco Ciappelli: And we're making new one.

Sean Martin: We are a new friend. Same. Good to good to meet you.

Saima Poorghobad: to meet you too. Good to meet you too.

Sean Martin: Love what you do with the, uh, with the conference. And, uh, it's always a well oiled machine. I'm sure in the background, uh, people are pulling their hair off. But always from a, from an attendee perspective and a media perspective, it's always been great.

And we enjoy working with the, with the team to pull the conversations together and pull the stories out of what's going on. And. In, uh, England and in Europe and beyond, we're thrilled to do it again this year.

Saima Poorghobad: Fantastic. We look forward to seeing you there. Definitely. It's just, uh, two short weeks away now, so yeah, lots of, um, lots of work going on in the [00:02:00] background.

Marco Ciappelli: Well, how about we start from the beginning, which is you. This is the first time that we actually talked to you in all these years, but I know you've been around. In the organization for a while as portfolio director. So a few words about you and uh, and I know there is a celebration as well this year, so let, let's start with that as well.

Saima Poorghobad: Absolutely. Absolutely. So thank you so much for, for having me on

Marco Ciappelli: I.

Saima Poorghobad: on the podcast today. So yeah, my name's Simon and I'm the portfolio director for our technology shows at rx. Global and, um, I've had the pleasure of working with the info security team for, uh, over five years now, five and a half years. And, um, you know, through that time we've gone through the pandemic and come out with the pandemic change venues. And, uh, and this year we, we absolutely have a, have a, have a great celebration in front of us. So it's our 30 year anniversary this year. We were due to celebrate our 25th anniversary, but it was actually, uh, COVID back then, so we never got to have that celebration.

So I'd like to think that we are making up. [00:03:00] year?

Marco Ciappelli: Well, we're certainly excited to be part of that celebration. Uh.

Sean Martin: good party.

Marco Ciappelli: Yeah. Right.

Saima Poorghobad: be one.

Marco Ciappelli: Yeah. So, so why, why don't we start with, uh, with looking a little bit back and then you tell us what the party, what the highlights, uh, for, for this year, um, is, um, and are, I'm sure there is more than one thing. So, uh, 30 years, that's technology time.

It's, it's a long time.

Sean Martin: It's three decades

Saima Poorghobad: yeah. Huge amount of change in that time. Huge amount of change and yeah, so our, our, our first event was in, was in 1996. So, and I think for the last 30 years we've. We've been one of the most crucial events in the calendar for, for those 30 years. But in that time, the, you know, the tech landscape and, and the cybersecurity landscape has continued to change and evolve and, and become more and more complex.

So, you know, from the, the early nineties, the emergence of the internet, uh, [00:04:00] digital transformation of the two thousands, the rise of the cloud. More recently, we've had the emergence of gen AI and quantum computing Now. And I think, you know, looking back over these three decades, if, if I look back myself, you know, we must have had thousands of visitors, you know, come through, come through our door.

We definitely have had thousands of visitors. You know, they, they've connected with, you know, hundreds and thousands of suppliers, attended countless seminars and sessions and formed, you know, probably tens of thousands of new contacts. And, you know, we'd like to think that, you know. These interactions at InfoSec have helped these cybersecurity professionals really strengthen those security measures in their organizations, their people, their data, their assets over that time to help keep them safe.

And, um, you know, we are, we are really proud to, to be part of that community. For the last 30 years, we certainly couldn't have done it with the support from, you know, our, our partners like yourselves, our, our, our advisory board who play a big role in our conference. Program every day, you know, all of our partners and, and indeed all of our, um, all of the [00:05:00] vendors and all of the visitors that have, that have walked through the doors over the thir last 30 years.

So we will be having a little bit of a celebration for that whole community this year.

Sean Martin: Yeah, let, let's talk about, uh, the community a little more. yeah, maybe you can speak to who, who attends maybe some of the changes there in terms of, of role, what they're looking for, um, how the interactions go, uh, from a communication perspective. 'cause I think. We look back, well, 30 years cyber wasn't even really a thing, right?

It was it people that did cyber

Saima Poorghobad: Yeah.

Sean Martin: and, that had its own, own, uh, way or it, it introduced its own way of getting people together and talking about things. So can you maybe share a little bit about who attends and, and how all those conversations amongst the community have changed?

Saima Poorghobad: absolutely. Absolutely. So, so we have, uh. We're expecting around 14,000 visitors this year, predominantly from the uk, but we do have a, a, A-A-A-A-A [00:06:00] fairly large contingent from, from Europe as well. And that's on the visitor side. And, and most all of our, uh, visitors are cybersecurity professionals. But what they actually do on a day-to-day basis, can, can re, can, can range.

They can either be specialists in a third. Certain area, or they can be, you know, someone more senior in the organization who's looking after cybersecurity strategy. On the whole though, what they are looking for is, is, is, is. Innovation insights and networking kind those, those three buckets. So innovation that's around kind of either the existing or the new innovation doesn't necessarily always come from new.

'cause you know, maybe it's you, you haven't found that certain innovation yet, but it might, might exist. Exist out there. whatever the current problem that they're trying to solve in their organization, you know, what's the technology or the service that's going to help them to solve that, and how can they implement it?

So, you know. We have people coming to look at technologies, all the way from very early on in that, in that buying cycle, if you like, sort of [00:07:00] looking for, for inspiration or, or at the very early days of thinking that this might be a problem all the way through to, you know, they might have selected two or three vendors and they're coming to insect to, to, to, you know, talk to the teams in more detail.

They're bringing their teams, their tech teams with them, um, uh, to, to sort of look at those products in more detail. So that's, and, and often what we hear from our visitors, they do want. though the existing technologies, those kinda larger companies are important, they also come, they wanna see what's new, you know, what are those new companies?

And so that's where our discovery zone, um, comes into play in our startup zone, where some of those new and exciting startups, um, can be found. So that's the innovation side of things and the insights. Um, you've, we've got a, a conference program. We have eight theaters and, uh, a range with a range of sort of, um, formats.

So you have, um, you know, high level keynotes, um, presentations. And then we have workshop style, smaller sessions, which are very interactive and that again, can be learning about technology. So we have some tech-focused sessions, but it can be around kind of learning [00:08:00] case studies. So what's worked, what hasn't worked, what are the pitfalls, which is another really interesting areas that our visitors, I.

Uh, like to hear about. Um, and you also get to learn from each other in those sessions that a, a lot of our visitors come to learn from their peers around kind of what, you know, how are they trying to solve this problem or how, what's worked in the past there. So that's that insight piece. And then the networking, again, you know, whether it's in our, in our leaders lounge or on the show floor, you know, we've got some new areas for networking. or whether it's some of the, the events around the events, you know, everybody really comes to kind of, you know, strengthen those existing relationships or build new ones within the community. You know, whether that's within their peer group or whether that's with, with vendors or partners. We really see it as a, as a place to kind of forge those relationships that, that lasts, you know, years and years.

And, and people say that that's, that's what they come back year and year after as well to do and, and everyone's going to be there. So that's what, and. Just to, to answer your other question about who attends, I think we really see this as an event for the, for the whole cybersecurity team and indeed anyone else working in an [00:09:00] organization who, who touches on cybersecurity be that tech and, and seniority. You know, you know, you, we, we get, you know, fairly people, early career people looking at, starting out in their sub cybersecurity careers all the way through to people who've been in, in the industry for the last 30 years. And really, I think there's something for everyone within that span of experience level.

Sean Martin: And I know we, we've connected with some folks, we see a lot of from, uh, the education space, the university and, and, uh, researchers. And we've seen an uptick in, in policy folks as well

Saima Poorghobad: Yes.

Sean Martin: different areas. So I, I presume you see some of that change too.

Saima Poorghobad: Yes, yes. We're focusing more on, on, on policy this year. We, we, we actually have the UK government coming to do some sessions where they wanna hear from the cybersecurity community about how can I getting help from them to input into the next kind of. Phase of, of regulation and then, and then suddenly, you know, we, we do engage with universities and, and, and, and students.

We have, we've created [00:10:00] a, we are actually creating a guide for students this year to kind of help them get more out the event. Sometimes they come and they don't really know what's there for them. So we are creating that. and we're encouraging to that, them to come on, on the afternoon of day two as well, just so we can kind of, you know, put our hands around them a little bit more and, and help them around the show as well.

Marco Ciappelli: That's very exciting and I, I'm gonna, I'm gonna move into. A couple of things that excite me, but I look at things more from a societal perspective, and I'm also a kind of a geek when it comes to space. So you know where I'm going with this. So where you got Brian Cox, which is one of my favorite, like honestly, uh, presenters and physicists.

His personality always been a big fan. Unfortunately, I know he doesn't give interviews, so I tried. We'll, we'll see. We'll see what happen. So. We're talking about having a, a, a safer, uh, cyber world as far the theme of the event goes, I think we're going with the universe here. Uh, that's joke I prepare, uh, a [00:11:00] while back.

But anyway, exciting to to know that there is somebody like him on stage, but also. Very excited for my perspective, Rory Stewart. Uh, I I look at the Geo Pol geopolitics and, and how cybersecurity affect not only our society as individual societies, but as a whole. So the vision on the global aspect, the universe, we see where that goes.

Um, and Rory presenting for this, it's very, very exciting to me, which come to show me that gone a long way from it. People talking about it. Versus this is a global every day for everyone, uh, problem to resolve. So your your take on that and what does excite you when it comes to.

Saima Poorghobad: A a, absolutely. I totally agree with you. I think that this isn't, this isn't just an IT problem. I think, you know, everyone can relate to cybersecurity in, in some way. You know, the, the, the threats are getting, you know, closer and closer to [00:12:00] home and, and. And you know, certainly here in the UK we've had some big, you know, retail names kind of be attacked, you know, recently.

Whereas, you know, some of, some of the other attacks can be quite niche, potentially, you know, certain sectors, but you know, everyone, everyone knows these names so it's certain, certainly front of mind. But yes, I'm very excited about those. Um, two keynote that you mentioned, uh, as well. So, so obviously Bri, Brian Cox.

So the thinking there was obviously around, um. And I think we are gonna, I'm, I'm gonna ask the team to change our tagline, actually building a safe, a safer cyber universe. So thanks for that. Um, so yeah, quantum computing, I think, you know, I think for a long time, you know, this has felt like more or less a, a remote prospect for many of us.

But, you know, recently, you know, there's been. Developments and the technology that have actually shown that these powerful quantum computers are actually on the near term horizon, I think, you know, potentially within the next five years. So the risk here is of course, that these will be able to break, you know, any existing encryption protocols that cannot be cracked with the existing tech.

So this level of risk, I [00:13:00] think, along with the rapid the technology development in this area, means that, you know, cybersecurity professionals really need to understand, you know, what they should be doing in this area. So. The conference, actually, I think this year we're gonna kick off with this topic.

So we have a abs, you know, the, the world renowned physicist, professor Brian Cox. So he's gonna talk about, the science. Um, so give, give, giving that universe perspective. So how the, you know, the incredible science of, of black holes and quantum mechanics, you know, might hold the answers to the futures of.

Cybersecurity and, and computing and, and, and, and so, you know, I'm fascinated to hear what, what he's going to say. And I think, you know, so I think that that is definitely gonna be a popular session. I think what then the cybersecurity professionals will obviously, will want to know is, okay, well what should I be doing about it?

So actually gonna be following that session on with a, with a session moderated by, um. The BBC's cybersecurity correspondent, Joe Tidy. So he's gonna set out sort of why that the threat is really relevant today and what are the actions that different types of organizations, um, and industry should be [00:14:00] taking right now in preparation.

So kind of teaming up that sort of, you know, the, the, the theory and that, that sort of high level, you know, universal view within actually kind of practically what should we be doing on a, on a day-to-day basis now. And I think that's quite a good. Sort of analogy of our, of our conference program. In the whole, it's kind of giving you, giving you the overarching, you know, what, what are the key things you need to be concerned about, and then actually how do you implement them and what do you do today? Um, and certainly, yeah, the geopolitical angle, I think it's, you know, something that, that, that, that's, you know. One of the biggest drivers of risk, probably now, and, and certainly seems to be vol evolving at, um, you know, unprecedented rates at, at the moment. Certainly. So, so you know who better to talk about that than, you know, Rory Stewart's.

Um, he is going to be, uh, deep diving into kind of what's going on at the moment with these global power dynamics and where might this all be heading. And, um, he's gonna be looking at things like alliances and how shifting alliances might change risks. He's gonna [00:15:00] be looking at where from around the globe might new threats emerge.

He's been looking at how a global trade war could affect cybersecurity. So really, really kind of topical and, and, and, and fascinating stuff that Yeah. I'm sure is gonna be interesting to a lot of our audience.

Sean Martin: I'm sure, uh, supply chain will be, uh, sprinkled throughout there as well.

Saima Poorghobad: sure, yes.

Sean Martin: away from that. And uh, building materials and software building materials more specifically been. Hot topics. I, I suspect that'll be in there too. As, as I look at the, the, uh, the, the conference program and some of the tracks. Of course there are, there are topics from AppSec to Cloud SEC to DevSecOps and IAM and, and incident response management and the things like, things like that. But are also tracks like case studies and research and demos and workshops. Can you kind of give. a sense to folks how, know if [00:16:00] there are certain ways that you find people navigate the, the tracks and the topics.

Do they, do they pick a, pick a technology and, and bring a collection of research and, and workshops together? Or do people dig into workshops or how does that look if you have,

Saima Poorghobad: Yeah. Yeah, it's, it's, it's a great, it's a great question, and I think, um, that I'll, I'll, I'll do my best to answer, but the, the, the, you've absolutely hit the nail on the head. So, so most of our theaters and our tracks are, um, divided into what I would call kind of, you know, um, uh, format types. So case study, you know, will be giving, you know, an example of an implementation in an organization, what's worked, what hasn't worked.

Tech demo will be giving a tech, uh, you know, more of the tech side of things, how to implement, you know, a demo. uh, a a deep dive will be going very deep on, on, on a topic. So, so, so that's the kind of format of the topic, but actually the actual topic itself will be intertwined into all of those different formats.

So when people are coming to the show, sometimes they can be [00:17:00] looking for example, for, you know, ransomware. Okay, I need to know about ransomware. Where can I find that? And that's when our, our app. And our website comes into play with all the different filters down the side. So if you are looking for a particular topic, you can then see, well, what theaters are those in?

And what times year though. However, for the first time, we are introducing one topic based theater as well, which is our AI and Cloud security theater. And that was off the back of feedback from last year where, you know, AI was. You know, we haven't mentioned it yet, or I think I mentioned it once, but, um, you know, it was, was, was, you know, tip of everyone's tongue and, and, and, and there was AI dotted all, all around the, the conference.

And, and we got feedback that, you know, it was a little bit tricky to navigate. So this year we said, okay, you know, we'll put AI and, and, and, and cloud content in one place. If you wanna know, you know about that. If you're particularly interested on that, which many people are. Here's the theater view, that doesn't mean that AI doesn't appear in another. Theaters and in other sessions, but we've created that as a bit of a test case, and it's likely that we'll start to roll out more of these kind of topic based, uh, theaters or tracks in the future.[00:18:00]

Marco Ciappelli: Yeah, you got 250 speakers I believe, so that's, uh. That's a lot. And, and I, I kind of, as we start closing here, and of course we are excited to dive deep into all of this in person there. Um. Let's talk a little bit about the community and, and, and I, and definitely it could feel a little overwhelming the first time that you get there, especially you arrive at Excel, it's pretty big.

There is a lot going on there. It is beautiful location. But, uh, um, yeah, some advice maybe for the, the, the first timers or the people that, uh, you know, as you said, there is definitely the opted help, but. At the human level? What, what, what's, how have you guys organized the, the networking point? I mean, I kind of know what to expect.

It's not the first time, but you know.

Saima Poorghobad: And we do, we do have many first time visitors and, and I have certainly been there in that overwhelming space where, where, you know, you walk into an event and you, you have no idea what, what, what, what, what to do next. So I think the [00:19:00] one thing, well the first thing I would highlight is, is preparation.

So. There is, there is a lot on infosecurity Europe. You know, we have, you know, hundreds of sessions and, and, and, and, you know, over 300, you know, exhibitors to go and see in many, many different technologies covered. So I would say, think about the, the, the, the top one to three challenges that you're facing at the moment and then prepare.

So look at the website, look at the app, and prepare which vendors you want to speak to, which sessions to go to and, and really kind of set up that calendar. And we've got various. Tools on our, on our website to help, to help you do that. Um, we're introducing some new formats this year. So we, you know, we've got something like 60 mini events within events, um, things like table talks, you know, which are smaller peer group discussions that you can book onto, you know, so, so it's even more important this year to kind of see what's available and, and, and, you know, pre-book onto some of these. These sessions. Um, I think using, using some of our, the technology available that, that we have, I think is really important. So I've mentioned one of those already, which is our InfoSec, um, [00:20:00] InfoSec meets platform. So there you can book meetings with, um, vendors and other visitors and, um, you can also book onto some of.

Some of these, um, smaller table talks as well. Um, the other thing that I would definitely say is, is, is share that you're going. So quite often when we see people, you know, on their social media say that, you know, I'm going, who else is going that, that, that, that, that network suddenly opens up and you can actually open up some of those networking opportunities that, you know, maybe people you know, don't know who's going or don't want to meet up. I think definitely sharing. The fact that you're going and, and asking who else is going on your network as well. Um, and then I think, you know, preparation is one thing, but follow up is also another thing. So it's all very well prep, preparing, coming, but actually, you know, up on, on either the vendors that you visited or the sessions that you went to is really important.

And that's one thing that we've heard from our visitors, you know, can be a bit of a struggle. You know, they get so much information. Then what do they do with it? For the first time this year, we're going to be giving our visitors the ability to [00:21:00] download the session, uh, slides, after the session has run and, and, and, and later on in the day, if they miss a session, they can, they can go back and download, download the slides, and that's really important because you've got those then to hand, you know, in the, in the, in the next.

Stay and weeks. And if you've got colleagues that you want to share those with or, or you want to follow up with, you know, maybe the vendor that was speaking, you've got that information to hand, instead of maybe having to click, you know, take photos or, you know, go back through your photo album. So that, so we're doing that for the first time this year.

We tested it a little bit last year and, and it worked really well, but we're doing that on all of our theaters this year as well.

Um, of course we will be there. We will be doing interview, we will [00:23:00] be going around the booth. We will participate in with the community. Always happy to get some selfies and a hug and to see people that we never met before, but also to make, to, to make new friends. So, um, I wanna invite everybody to follow us and what.

Marco Ciappelli: All right. Good.

Saima Poorghobad: Really exciting.
