When is a building more than just a thing, and it becomes smart? When it can adjust to the needs of its tenants, occupants, workers, and guests, that's when. In this podcast, we learn what this means and how our spaces should adapt to us and not the other way around.
When is a building more than just a thing, and it becomes smart? When it can adjust to the needs of its tenants, occupants, workers, and guests, that's when. In this podcast, we learn what this means and how our spaces should adapt to us and not the other way around.
Please listen as Sean chats with designer Todd Boucher to discuss this and the future of living as our society becomes more technologically advanced.
The design, construction, existence, and maintenance of smart buildings is a complex system that involves many parts and many players. Sure, there are the people inside the building that get to experience what it has to offer. Still, the building owners, the building managers, the maintenance crew, and even external entities such as the community and social services and emergency response may also interact with the building.
Each party has its own perspective on what is essential. The building owner may care most about the cost to build and maintain the building. The building manager may care most about keeping the systems up and running for all tenants and guests. The tenants themselves also have their own perspective on what's important — safety, comfort, lifestyle, and convenience might top the list for this group.
The system is complex, and it could be pretty challenging to create a space that gives everyone involved what they want. It's almost sure that trade-offs will need to be made. Unless, however, technology can be utilized to identify and dynamically bridge those gaps that would otherwise force tough decisions to be made.
The answers are in the decision that needs to be made to start the thinking process and drive those. Is the technology that tells what can be done and drive itself, or is what technology can do to satisfy the humans' need and desires that will bring life into those spaces.
When it comes to technology, nearly everything is possible, but things shouldn't be done just because they are possible. We need better drivers than that. Don't we?
What do you think?
